Phosphorous is one of the most abundant chemicals in the body. Calcium and phosphorous are often discussed together because the two chemicals function together in bone formation.
Approximately 80% of Phosphorous is found in bones and teeth and the balance in soft tissues.
Phosphorous is required by ruminal microorganisms for their growth and cellular metabolism. In grazing livestock, Phosphorous deficiency is the most prevalent of mineral deficiencies and shows itself as reduced appetite, growth, milk production, impaired reproduction and weak fragile bones.
Phosphorous deficient cattle often chew bones, sticks etc, called Pica. Pica is a depraved appetite that is habitual. Pica as a habit is particularly hard to break or manage. Phosphorous deficient animals will require a Phosphorous supplement, Compass Feeds, GrazeMin Hi Phos Cattle is a product designed to supply Phosphorous in a readily absorbed, palatable ad-lib lick that contains a full compliment of Macro and trace elements and includes a natural bypass protein. Phosphorous deficient soils are widespread and forages produced on these soils are low in Phosphorous.
Drought conditions and increased plant maturity can also result in low Phosphorous intake. Cereal grains and oilseed meals contain moderate levels of Phosphorous and supplementation may still be required.
Because many forages contain inadequate levels of phosphorous, deficiency is often widespread and herd production is impacted, particularly reproduction, it has also been found that reproductive problems with these animals may also be protein related.
Feeding high levels of supplementary Phosphorous may cause bone resorption, elevated blood plasma levels and urinary calculi as a result of precipitation of calcium and magnesium phosphates in the kidney. Feeding increased levels of calcium may reduce the impact. Compass Feeds has increased calcium levels in this product in line with current formulation procedures.
